What is an Apprenticeship?

What is an apprenticeship? Very simply stated, an apprenticeship is on-the-job-training. A person who gets trained while being paid, and learns a particular craft or skill, is an apprentice. Working under a person who has mastered the trade is a very good way to be able to ask questions as they arise while observing first-hand the best practices of the trade, and duplicating the expertise of the teacher. The history of apprenticeship is a very interesting one.

Today, working as an apprentice can be helpful in procuring a job in an interested field without having had formal education. For instance, if you're interested in how electricity works and would be happy working as an electrician, finding an employer willing to take you on as an apprentice to learn the skills necessary to be successful in that profession could be the start of a fulfilling career.

If you work as an electrician's apprentice for 3-5 years, you will then progress to becoming a journeyman, making more money in the process of your hands-on education. In another few years, you will have the knowledge and expertise in the trade to be eligible for an exam that, if passed, will give you the title of Master Electrician.

What is an apprenticeship? It's a great opportunity to get paid while learning to do something you love that can open new doors and make you an expert in a respected field.
